Why did Sony just delay Morbius?
Morbius is synonymous with delays at this point. The upcoming Sony film has seen its premiere date change several times throughout the past two years. Sony originally planned to launch Morbius on July 31, 2020. But, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Sony decided to push its release date back to March 2021 and then to October 2021. The film was then further delayed to January 21, 2022, and January 28, 2022. Now, here’s to hoping that Morbius’ April 1, 2022 release date is final. Morbius is the third standalone film and the second non-sequel in Sony’s Spider-Man universe. Because Sony has effectively loaned out Spider-Man to Marvel and Disney, Sony has created its universe featuring some of web-head’s most iconic villains. After starting with Venom in 2018 and Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 2021, Morbius is up next. The film will star the divisive method actor, Jared Leto, as the titular anti-hero, Dr. Michael Morbius, in a movie that will also feature the character’s cinematic debut. Morbius will revolve around the doctor’s botched attempt to cure his rare blood disorder as it turns him into a living vampire. By delaying Morbius, Sony just robbed fans of the chance to finally know which universe the movie belongs to. Even if it’s technically part of Sony’s slate of movies, theories are going around about which universe the film’s events happen. For example, the second Morbius trailer features several connections to Venom and Spider-Man, as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe by way of Michael Keaton’s Vulture. In other Spider-Man news, No Way Home continues to pull in the numbers at the global box office. Tom Holland’s third solo outing as Spider-Man just saw the film set a pandemic-era box office record. No Way Home is also Sony’s highest-grossing movie ever with a total tally that’s still growing by the day.
